Sustainable September Festival at South Melbourne Market

Aaron Moynes

This month we say goodbye to Melbourne’s long winter and get outside and enjoy the spring sunshine. Eco Guardians recommend heading out to the action-packed Sustainable September festival, an initiative from the treasured South Melbourne Market.

South Melbourne Market is a community hub renowned for the freshest produce, and infamous dim sims. Not only does the market offer a variety of stalls and produce, it is also focused on creating a sustainable market for future generations to enjoy.

In 2016, South Melbourne Market partnered with Eco Guardians to install a GG-1200H SoilFood™ System as part of tackling their contribution of food waste in landfill. The unit processes their vast amount of leftover fruit, veg, coffee and fish offal – which could be as much as 1.2 tonnes per day! With the backing of Port Phillip Council, the market had a vision and installed the SoilFood™ System to prevent this waste going to landfill. Thanks to the SoilFood™ System, the waste is re-purposed into a valuable fertiliser, and the moisture drawn from the food is used for cleaning and irrigation.

Port Phillip Mayor, Ms Bernadene Voss, thinks the SoilFood™ System is an amazing machine that has been an fantastic addition to the market. Mayor Voss spoke on 3AW about how the machine turns leftover produce into SoilFood™, a valuable product they then sell to market patrons.

Sustainable September is a two week festival held over the school holidays and is packed with fun activities for the kids and plenty of learning opportunities for all. The festival will also include guided tours to learn more on how the SoilFood™ System works within the market, who operates it, and what is done with the valuable SoilFood™.
